HOW TO PAINT A PORTRAIT: TOOLS

You will need:

  • A stretched canvas / canvas board
  • A good selection of brushes including a wide (household) brush for varnishing
  • A glass jar with a screw lid (for turpentine)
  • A plastic bowl (big enough to contain paint to cover the entire surface)
  • ‘Low Odour Thinner’, ‘Liquin Light Gel’ and ‘Gloss Picture Varnish’ from your local art store
  • Black and white acrylic paint
  • A separate large jar / re-usable plastic bowl for varnish

You’ll also need a good selection of oil colours. I recommend Titanium White, Cadmium Red Deep, French Ultramarine Blue, and Black. In addition, I recommend two yellows: Cadmium Yellow Deep and Cadmium Lemon – depending on the colours in the picture, these will make very different skin shades and also go to make different greens when mixed with blue (the cadmium lemon being the ‘brighter’ shade, making a bright green – and the cadmium deep making a more subdued shade). A limited palette is best – to keep colours looking fresh and to maintain good colour harmony in the picture.
