HOW TO PAINT A PORTRAIT: STEP 8

Varnishing

8. Finishing touches and VarnishingWhen the painting is dry, empty some varnish into a large jar or plastic bowl. Taking a large (wide) brush, work quickly and paint the varnish on in a fashion similar to painting a wall – vertically then horizontally, spreading the varnish out thinly across the painting to avoid drips (varnish drips and dries very quickly, so this is quite a skilled job). You’ll need plenty of ventilation as the solvent smell is quite potent. Leave the varnished painting to dry fully. Job done! Click the image to see it at a larger size.
