HOW TO PAINT A PORTRAIT: STEP 7

Overpainting

7. Black Glaze Full RenderingAdd more Liquin Light Gel to the black paint to thin it out further and brush evenly over the mid tones. Thin it even more, then paint a final layer of very translucent, barely-black glaze over the lightest areas to help to unify the image.

Now is the time to add any small finishing touches – the blue in the eyes, a little extra colour on the lips. Leave the painting to dry for a full day. Your painting is now technically ‘finished’, though, to unite the texture of the painting and bring out the richness of the colour, I like to add a layer of varnish.
