HOW TO PAINT A PORTRAIT: STEP 5

Painting Skin

5. Skin Highlights and body colourNow, while all this paint is still wet, mix yet more white into the skin tone pigment and, using a clean brush, paint the very lightest tones directly onto the canvas. Your subject should now be looking close to fully rendered. Leave the painting to dry (1 – 3 days depending on how thickly you laid the colour on). Clean your bowl and brushes. I try to be eco-friendly and use tissue paper to clean off the excess and throw it in the bin before cleaning with straight washing up liquid (turpentine should never go down the sink).

A tip – When I created this image, I added a thin blue wash to the shadows when the paint was dry as blue is a ‘cool’ colour and creates depth.
